For the teachers of the law, purity is from outside in, hence their ritual cleansing of hands. They go beyond what was required by the law, but neglect justice and helping the poor around them.
Are we equally guilty of placing emphasis on external things, in order to earn God's blessings?
Do we have the need for attention, or approval from men i.e. the places of honour at the synagogue?
Do we compare and judge those around us based on how we perceive their obedience to God's laws?
According to Jesus, purity comes out from our hearts.
We have received freedom from sin and death, we are now free to live for those around us.
